Today’s tutorial is going to be all theory. The box model is an inevitable part of CSS, and understanding it is critical if you want to do anything remotely interesting. Like most of CSS, it’s a lot simpler than it sounds. Here it is:

Before discussing the box model, it is important to understand the difference between inline and block level elements. Inline elements are things like links, s and s—any element that appears “inline” in a piece of text without inserting any newlines. Block level elements on the other hand always start on a new line and cause any content following them to start on a new line as well. They include things like

and the various header tags. Block level elements can contain both block level and inline elements, but inline elements can only contain other inline elements. An inline element can be “promoted” to behave like a block level element using the display: block; property, and the reverse can be achieved using display: inline;—note however that doing this does not change the rules about what kind of elements something can contain. The box model principally applies to block level elements (although some of it works with inline elements as well).

As you can see from the diagram, the box model deals with the width, margin, padding and border around an element. You can specify a width using the width property; width can be specified in pixels, ems or percentages (and other units as well but these are the most common) and applies to the area on the diagram labelled “content area”. It should be noted that the overall width of the box up to the borders (the dark grey area on the diagram) is actually the width, plus the left padding, plus the right padding, plus the width of the left and right borders.

The JPEG Format

The JPEG format, with its support for 16.7 million colors, is primarily intended for photographic images. The internal compression algorithm of the JPEG format, unlike the GIF format, actually throws out information. Depending on what settings you use, the thrown out data may or may not be visible to the eye. Once you lower the quality of an image, and save it, the extra data cannot be regained so be sure to save the original.

Any JPEG file can be saved as a Progressive JPEG. This is very similar to the interlaced GIF. As with GIF, this presents a low-quality image to your visitor at first, and over several passes improves the quality of it. Some graphic editing tools allow you to specify the number of passes before the image downloads completely.

The GIF format is one of the most popular formats on the Internet. Not only is the format excellent at compressing areas of images with large areas of the same color, but it is also the only option for putting animation online (unless you want to use Flash or other vector-based animation formats, which typically cost more). The GIF89a format also supports transparency, and interlacing.

GIF files support a maximum of 256 colors, which makes them practical for almost all graphics except photographs. The most common method of reducing the size of GIF files is to reduce the number of colors on the palette. In Publisher 2000, you can create Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) pages, but you cannot open and edit the HTML pages in Publisher after they are created. If you want to use Publisher to create and publish a Web site, it is recommended that you save a copy of your document as a publication file (.pub). In this way, if you want to make any changes to your Web site, you can edit the .pub file, save it as a new HTML document, and then republish it in Publisher. Or, you can import your publication into FrontPage and then use FrontPage to edit your pages and publish your Web site. You may want to do this if you want to add the many available FrontPage features and formatting options to your Web pages.

To import your Web publication into FrontPage and then edit and publish your Web site, follow the steps in the "Save Your Publication in HTML Format" and "Import Your Web Site into FrontPage" sections of this article.

Save Your Publication in HTML Format

When you create a publication in Publisher, it is saved with a .pub file extension. Before you import your publication into FrontPage, you must first save (publish) it in HTML format. To do this, follow these steps:

1.	Start Publisher, and then open your publication.
2.	On the File menu, click Save as Web Page.
3.	In the Save as Web Page dialog box, accept the default Publish folder that Publisher creates when you publish (save) your publication in HTML format, or specify another folder and location on your hard disk in which to save the HTML files, and then click OK. The Web site created from your publication is now published to the folder that you specified on your hard disk. The home page file name is Index.html.
4.	Quit Publisher.

Import Your Web Site into FrontPage

Start FrontPage.

Do one of the following:

•	If you are using FrontPage 2000, point to New on the File menu, and then click Web. -or-
•	If you are using FrontPage 2002, point to New on the File menu, and then click Page or Web.

In the New dialog box (in FrontPage 2000) or the New Page or Web task pane (in FrontPage 2002), click Empty Web, and then click OK.

On the File menu, click Import, and then click Add Folder.

Do one of the following:

•	If you are using FrontPage 2000, locate the folder containing your HTML files in the Browse for Folder dialog box, and then click OK. -or-
•	If you are using FrontPage 2002, locate the folder containing your HTML files in the File Open dialog box, and then click Open.

The contents of the folder are listed in the Import dialog box.

Click OK.

The folder containing your HTML files is listed in the Folder List pane in your new Web.

Click the plus sign (+) next to the folder to expand it and view its contents.

Drag the Index.html file from the folder to the root of your Web.

Photoshop Web Template — Web Site Design Tutorial

Many people new to web design are confused by slices and Javascript rollovers and end up abandoning their projects out of frustration. The point of this Photoshop web tutorial is to keep things simple by creating a web page that uses only 2 graphics.

Website Plan
We'll create a banner and place it in a table that will contain 5 rows and 1 column. The banner will be placed in the top row. The next row will contain the text for your site and any photos you may wish to include. Row 3 will hold a separator, row 4 will be for your text links and a copyright notice, and row 5 will hold a second separator.

Let's Get Going
I'm going to name this site Designer Girlz Network. The next step is to find a graphic for the banner. You might find a good image at one of the free stock photo sites (I've listed some below), but I was looking for something a little more professional, so I tried the iStockPhoto galleries and found an illustration by Vinaya Prashanth that cost only $3. Sweet. That's a reduced version of it on the right.

Choose A Website Color Scheme
The colors of the banner and the website will be taken from the various pinks used in the image. There are 3 pinks I want to use — a dark pink, a middle pink, and a lighter pink that I made myself from a shade of the darker pink.

I find that by using the opacity slider on a sampled color you can create a nice variation. Open a new document and copy and paste the main graphic you've chosen into it. Now from the toolbox select the eyedropper tool and sample a color by clicking on it in your graphic. This will change the foreground color square in your toolbox.

Now open another new document and in the Background Contents select White. Click OK. With this document open, create a new layer by going Layer> New> Layer. Then go Edit> Fill and select Contents, Use: Foreground Color. This will fill your document with the color you just sampled. The trick here is to lower the opacity using the slider and to keep playing around with it until you find a nice shade. When you settle on one, flatten the image by going Layer> Flatten Image. Use the eyedropper tool again, this time to change the foreground color square in your toolbox so it is the same as your newly created color. Now click on the color square and the color picker will come up, and you can write down the numbers of your new color.

Choose A Font
I went through my fonts and settled on Onyx regular. When you find a font that works for you, try playing with the tracking, the leading, and the scale — or a combination. It makes it more personal and unique when you include some tweaks.

To select a font in Photoshop go Window> Character. In the palette you'll see a list of your installed fonts. To tweak the settings you'll need to bring up the Paragraph palette. You can do this by going Window> Paragraph.

Designing A Website Banner
Create a new document that is 600 x 300 pixels. You can change this size to suit your own design when you pick your own stock photo and plan the layout accordingly.

Now I'll create a new layer, Layer> New Layer and I'll call it Designer Girl. I'll place the illustration on this layer and shrink it to fit. You shrink your graphic by choosing Edit> Transform> Scale. The bounding box will have handles. Use the Shift Key to constrain proportions, and shrink your image by selecting the top left handle and pulling towards the bottom right. To move the graphic, drag inside the bounding box. Click enter when you're happy with the results.

Next we want a tinted background. I'm going to go with the light pink.

Adding A Background Color
I select the background layer, Layer 1, and I fill it with the light pink by going Select> All, then Edit> Fill, and in the dialog box in Contents, I select Use: Color and in the Color Picker I enter FBE0EC.

The result is a 600 x 300 banner with a gentle background color and with the art placed on the left. We're getting there.

Apply A Thick Stroke To Create A Border
I decided to apply a thick stroke to the background layer to make the design more interesting. First make sure the background layer, Layer 1, is active, and create a copy by going Layer> New> Layer Via Copy. Next double-click next to the layer name. This will bring up the Blending Options in the Layers Style dialog box.

Select and then click on the word Stroke in the Styles options on the left side. I changed the settings to Size: 7px, Position: Inside, Blend Mode: Normal, Opacity: 100%, Fill Type: Color, and I clicked the color swatch and entered D04E8C in the color picker. Click OK.

The border is just to balance out the design, so by all means make changes and get creative with your own ideas.

Website Name & Section Titles
We're going to put the names of the major sections right on the banner. These will be the links. Since it will be just one single graphic we will be using image maps.

Create a new layer for your words. Use the type tool to create the section names and then use the move tool to position them exactly to where you want on the banner. Remember to pick a color for your text that is darker than your background color to avoid finding yourself screaming obscenities and suffering major hair loss! Do this by going Window> Character. In the Character palette you'll find a color square. Click on it to change colors.

You'll need an HTML editor like GoLive or Dreamweaver to automate this process. It's really very simple. You make little "maps" over each word and then enter the link destination. If you don't have an HTML editor you'll need to do a Google search on image maps to find a tutorial, or buy a book like Elizabeth Castro's HTML Quickstart Guide to help you out.

Plan B
You don't have an HTML editor, you don't want to search for a tutorial, and you don't want to buy Elizabeth Castro's book? That's ok. We'll go to Plan B - using regular text links right inside the web page itself. That means we have some empty space on the banner now, right below the website name. Use this space to add a descriptive phrase about what the user will find on your site.

The Separator
Create a new document. The width should be 600 pixels, and the height should be about 12 pixels. Fill this with your background color. Then, using the text tool and a dark color, type some periods, like this:........... and place them in the file, centering them. Change the size and the spacing until it looks perfect. Now save this as a GIF file.

Build A Simple Table
In your HTML editor of choice build a simple table that contains 5 rows and 1 column. If you're going to use text link navigation below the banner instead of image maps on the banner, create an extra row so you end up with 6 rows in your table. Now place your elements into the individual rows of the table and you're done.

The Final Result
It's time to have a look! Here is the final website page design.

Plan Bb — Let Someone Else Do It
If you are on deadline and can't cope with learning any more Photoshop techniques or HTML, here's another solution. You can buy a ready-made template from Template Monster that you can use as a base to create web pages in Photoshop.

On the front page of Template Monster you'll find a pulldown menu where you can select options and then carry out a search for a template. The templates are reasonably priced and pretty easy to manage in GoLive or Dreamweaver. In the past I've purchased a template solely for the color scheme and the images. On certain projects I found this was less expensive than buying stock photos. Visit Template Monster to see the wide variety of website templates that they offer.

All versions of SiteGrinder generate web pages with graphics, styled and even scrolling web text, rollover buttons, popups, and multi-level menus. Interactive elements can be constructed from graphics, text, or a mix of both, and function across multiple web pages that are automatically linked to one another.

SiteGrinder uses the names of your layers to generate pages. You simply add hints like "-button," "-rollover," and "-link" to the end of your layer names, then open SiteGrinder from Photoshop’s File> Automate menu and click the Build button. SiteGrinder can create an entire website containing styled text, rollover buttons, popups, text and graphic menus — all from the layer names in Photoshop. Methodology

Before we get down to business we should point out that there are two very different ways to make a website.

1. The quickest and easiest way to make a site is to use an on-line "wizard" supplied by your internet service provider (ISP) or some other organization.
To use this method, visit the internet address given to you by the organization providing the service. There you will be guided through a series of simple steps which will result in a site being constructed for you. The advantage of this method is that you don't need any skills other than using your browser. The drawback is that you are very limited in what you can do with this kind of website.
2. The other approach is to construct a website on your own computer, then "upload" it to the internet so that other people can access it. This is the way most serious sites are made, and it's the method that this tutorial will cover.

Note: As the internet is such a complicated environment, these introductory tutorials tend to over-simplify explanations of how things work. You shouldn't take all our examples and illustrations too literally, but the information is conceptually sound. In time, you can choose to make the effort and build up a more technically accurate understanding.
Getting Started

It can all look very intimidating for the beginner, but if you know how to surf the internet and use a word processor then you should have no trouble making a website.

However, the single biggest mistake we see from beginners is trying to do too much too soon. Whatever your level of experience with computers and the internet, it's absolutely critical that you take things slowly and don't get ahead of yourself. Website construction is a minefield. If you have a map you'll be fine, but if you think it looks easy and go charging in you'll end up coming apart!

Many software applications will tell you that web design is easy. It's common to see claims such as "Make your own website in minutes -- no experience necessary!". In our opinion these claims are misleading -- you simply can't learn enough in a few minutes to have any chance of success. You can learn the basics in an hour or so, but you'll need a lot longer if you want to be any good.

People often ask us to recommend a computer program which will allow them to create fantastic websites. They sometimes show us a website they like and say "I want a program that will make sites like this." This scenario is somewhat like taking a photo of a house into a hardware shop and saying "I want a hammer which will make a house like this".

So here's the first reality check: There is no such thing as a program which makes good sites. Although some programs are more helpful than others, in the end it's up to you. Good websites aren't impressive because they were made with a good program, they are impressive because they were made by an experienced person. To make a great site you need to do a great deal of learning. There are no shortcuts.

WYSIWYG Editors

WYSIWYG means "What You See Is What You Get". WYSIWYG web-page editors are similar to word processors and they allow you to construct a web page without using HTML instructions. You simply type in your text, add pictures, etc, using familiar toolbars and menus. The editor makes the HTML code in the background.

* Adobe Dreamweaver
* Microsoft FrontPage
* Microsoft Publisher

The screenshot on the right is from Dreamweaver. Using the tools provided, you can add text, images and other elements directly onto the page.

These editors have obvious advantages such as speed and ease of use. However, there is a trade-off: They are not 100% reliable. If you examine the HTML code, you are likely to find mistakes and unwanted extra code. They also tend to be deceptive - you may think you're producing a fantastic page but find that it looks very different once you publish it. Remember that these editors usually use an approximation of how the page will look. To see your page as it really is you need to view it in a browser.

For these (and other) reasons, some professional web designers refuse to use WYSIWYG editors. Instead, they use simple text editors and compose all the HTML manually. However, it's becoming more common to use a mixture of both methods. A good WYSIWYG editor will give you the option to edit the HTML code manually. At the bottom of the Dreamweaver screenshot there is a panel which shows the HTML code for the page being worked on. As you edit the page in WYSIWYG mode, the HTML automatically updates. Likewise, you can edit the HTML code and the WYSIWYG view will be updated.
Recommendations

Finding the right software isn't easy. If possible you should try a number of different options - most good editors have free trial versions available. Here's what we think about a few leading contenders:

* Adobe Dreamweaver is our tool of choice. It is widely considered to be at least best equal in the field of professional web design. It's also perfectly suitable for the novice. It's not cheap!
* Adobe Contribute is a lower-cost sibling of Dreamweaver. It allows you to maintain and update your website as well as collaborate with other people who work with you.
* Microsoft Frontpage is a good program for beginners, but be warned: this program has a whole range of flaws and does not have a good reputation in professional circles. Although it is a specialist web development program and is much cheaper than many of it's competitors, there are free programs available which offer essentially the same functionality without the hassles.
Ironically we use Frontpage quite a lot, because people often send us Frontpage files to work on (one of the drawbacks - Frontpage websites often can't be edited with other programs). Believe it when we say Frontpage causes far more than it's fair share of grief.
* Microsoft Publisher was originally designed for print media but has evolved to include web design. It has the advantage of being relatively cheap, versatile and familiar. Many people use it simply because they already have it installed. However it is not a specialist HTML editor and doesn't perform well. We don't recommend it.
* Microsoft Word is similar to Publisher in that it was never originally designed for internet work. Although it can read and edit HTML documents, it does so very badly indeed. If at all possible, avoid it like the plague.
* There are numerous free HTML editors available. Search the internet, visit web design newsgroups and spend some time deciding.
